Basics guide

How to show items on the ground

Show item labels in PoE2 with Z or Alt, restore the Always Highlight setting, check controller bindings, and tell a hidden loot-filter item from a disabled label.

Quick answer

On keyboard, press Z once to toggle Always Highlight back on. Hold Alt when you only want to reveal labels temporarily. If an expected item is still missing, check the active item filter because Z permanently shows only labels allowed by that filter. On controller, L2 plus D-pad Right toggles Always Highlight by default, while pressing Left Stick reveals items hidden by the filter.

Quick checks

3 points
  • Stand near an item that you just saw drop so you can test the label immediately.
  • Know whether you are using keyboard and mouse or a controller.
  • If a loot filter is active, remember that it may intentionally hide low-priority drops.

Step 1

Press Z to restore persistent labels

Z is the default keyboard binding for Toggle Always Highlight. Press it once and check the nearby drop. When Always Highlight is active, labels permitted by the current item filter remain visible instead of fading after a few seconds.

  • Press Z once rather than holding it.
  • Look for the item name, not only the small item model on the ground.
  • If several labels are displaced, press Z twice to hide and redraw them.

Step 2

Hold Alt for a temporary check

Alt is the default temporary highlight key on keyboard. With Always Highlight active, holding Alt can also expose labels hidden by the item filter. With Always Highlight disabled, Alt temporarily displays the labels that pass the filter instead.

  • Use Alt when you do not want every permitted label left on screen.
  • Release Alt after checking a crowded drop pile.
  • Do not confuse this with inventory item descriptions that can share a related highlight binding.

Step 3

Use the correct controller action

L2 plus D-pad Right toggles Always Highlight by default. Pressing Left Stick performs a different action: since version 0.1.1e, it reveals items hidden by the active item filter. If either control does nothing, inspect the current controller bindings because a custom layout can change them.

  • Use L2 plus D-pad Right when every permitted label disappeared.
  • Press Left Stick when the filter may have hidden a specific item.
  • Check whether a custom layout replaced either default action.

Step 4

Check Always Highlight in the settings

Open Options and find Always Highlight in the gameplay or interface settings, then confirm it is enabled. Z changes this setting directly, so it may be off even when you previously enabled it in the menu.

  • Confirm the option after changing keybindings.
  • Check for an accidental Z press if labels suddenly vanish during play.
  • Keep the setting enabled when you want filter-approved labels to remain visible.

Step 5

Check whether the loot filter hid the item

An item filter changes label appearance and can hide unwanted drops. If Z restores some labels but not the item you expected, hold Alt near the drop pile and inspect the active filter. Change the matching Hide rule to Show, lower the filter strictness, or temporarily select no filter when testing.

  • Distinguish all labels being off from one item class being filtered.
  • Verify the active filter under Options, General, Item Filter.
  • Reload the filter after changing its rules.

Important limits

Z does not disable the loot filter

Always Highlight keeps filter-approved labels visible. It does not permanently turn every Hide rule into Show.

Controls can be rebound

Z, Alt, and the controller combination are defaults. Use the current in-game binding when a custom layout has changed them.

A misplaced label may only need a redraw

When labels no longer line up with their items, toggling Always Highlight off and on can rebuild their positions.
