Quick answer

Right-click a Scroll of Wisdom, then left-click an unidentified item. After completing Sorrow Among Stones in Act 1, choose Identify Items at The Hooded One in a town to identify the entire inventory for free. Ctrl plus left-click on The Hooded One uses that service directly. After the campaign, Doryani identifies items and remains available in the Hideout.

Before you start

3 points
  • Keep the unidentified equipment in the character inventory rather than the stash.
  • Use a Scroll of Wisdom when away from town or when only one item needs to be checked.
  • Complete Sorrow Among Stones to unlock The Hooded One's free identification service.
1
Step 1

Check whether the item is unidentified

Magic, Rare, and Unique equipment found on the ground can be unidentified. Its final modifiers are hidden until identification. Currency, quest items, and many other item classes do not use this equipment-identification step.

  • Look for Unidentified on the item.
  • Do not confuse a hidden modifier with an empty modifier slot.
  • Keep the item in the character inventory for an NPC to identify it.

Step 2

Use a Scroll of Wisdom on one item

Right-click a Scroll of Wisdom, then left-click the unidentified item. The Scroll is consumed and the item's modifiers become visible. Scrolls can drop anywhere and are useful inside an area when returning to town would interrupt the run or consume a Map portal.

  • Right-click the Scroll first.
  • Apply it to one unidentified item.
  • Read the revealed modifiers before equipping, crafting, selling, or discarding the item.
Mechanic

Item Level

Check which modifier tiers the identified item could have rolled.

Step 3

Identify the full inventory with The Hooded One

Complete Sorrow Among Stones in Act 1 to make The Hooded One available in campaign towns. Speak to him and choose Identify Items to identify every eligible item in the character inventory for free. On mouse and keyboard, Ctrl plus left-click on The Hooded One performs the identification directly.

  • Complete Sorrow Among Stones.
  • Move unidentified items from the stash into the character inventory.
  • Use Identify Items or Ctrl plus left-click.

Step 4

Use Doryani after the campaign

Doryani takes over the identification service after the campaign and can identify the full inventory. Since version 0.3.0, The Hooded One cannot be placed in the Hideout and remains available in towns, while Doryani continues to provide identification in the Hideout.

  • Use Doryani for endgame inventory batches.
  • Use The Hooded One only from a town.
  • Carry Scrolls when identification is needed before returning to the Hideout.

Step 5

Evaluate the revealed modifiers

After identification, compare the modifier tiers, item level, requirements, sockets, quality, and build relevance. Identification reveals what already rolled; it does not reroll or improve the item. Identified modifiers can also be used by item-filter rules after the item is dropped again.

  • Separate implicit, explicit, enchantment, and socketed effects.
  • Check modifier tiers against the item's item level.
  • Use the crafting tool only after recording the current affixes.

Important limits

The NPC service reads the character inventory

Items left in the stash are not part of the batch. Move them into the inventory before choosing Identify Items.

The Hooded One is not a Hideout NPC

Version 0.3.0 removed The Hooded One from Hideouts. Use him in towns or use Doryani in the Hideout after the campaign.

Identification does not change the item

It reveals existing properties. It does not add, remove, upgrade, or reroll modifiers.
