Item Modifiers

Item modifiers are stat lines or rules attached to an item. They include implicit modifiers, explicit prefixes and suffixes, enchantments, corruption enchantments, crafted and Desecrated modifiers, fractured modifiers, and the fixed effects on Unique items.

What Item Modifiers does

Current rules

Identify the modifier type before judging or changing it. Item level and item class determine which ordinary explicit affix tiers are eligible, while prefix and suffix slots and modifier groups determine what can coexist. A higher item level unlocks stronger tiers but keeps lower unlocked tiers in the pool. Spawn weight is relative to the complete eligible pool, so a raw weight is not a universal crafting percentage.

Implicit, explicit, and enchantment are separate
An implicit belongs to the base item and appears on every ordinary instance of that base unless another effect replaces it. Explicit modifiers are generated from rarity or crafting and normally occupy prefix or suffix slots. Enchantments use a separate slot and can come from systems such as Augments, Instilling, or corruption.
Prefixes and suffixes
Most Rare equipment can have up to three prefixes and three suffixes. Magic equipment normally has at most one prefix and one suffix. Some item classes have lower limits.
Item level
The item's level controls which affixes and tiers may roll when the item drops or is modified with currency. The required level to equip an item is a different value.
Affix tier
Tier compares modifiers inside one stat group. T1 is the strongest value range for that modifier on the item type. Different modifier groups have different numbers of tiers and different item-level requirements.
Spawn weight
Weight is relative inside the current eligible pool. A modifier with weight 1,000 is twice as likely as one with weight 500 only when both compete in the same roll.
Modifier group
Tiers that represent the same kind of stat normally share a modifier group. An item cannot ordinarily hold two explicit modifiers from the same group, so an existing group can block later rolls.
Local and global
A local modifier changes a base stat on the item itself, such as a weapon's Physical Damage or Attack Speed. A global modifier affects the character, skill, or other broader calculation named by its wording.
Every condition must match
The complete wording defines scope. Attack, Spell, Projectile, Minion, Hit, damage type, weapon type, enemy state, and other conditions must all match the component being calculated. A modifier can apply to one component of a skill without applying to another.
Crafted and Desecrated are tracked separately
Since version 0.5.0, an item can normally have one crafted modifier. A Desecrated modifier occupies a prefix or suffix slot but does not count as the crafted modifier; ordinary items are normally limited to one Desecrated modifier.
Fracturing locks one modifier
A Fracturing Orb can fracture a random modifier on an eligible Rare item with at least four modifiers. The fractured modifier remains locked against ordinary removal or value randomisation while other modifiers can still be changed by compatible crafting.

Modifier types and calculation roles

10 cases
01
Implicit modifier

A base-type property present independently of ordinary explicit affixes. It does not consume a prefix or suffix slot.

02
03
Local modifier

Changes the item value named by the modifier before another system uses that item, such as a martial weapon's displayed Physical Damage or Attacks per Second.

04
Global modifier

Changes the character, skill, target, or other stated scope rather than rewriting a base value on the item. Every condition in the wording still has to match.

06
Crafted modifier

A modifier added through a crafting method that marks it as crafted. Under the current baseline, an item can normally hold one crafted modifier at a time.

07
Desecrated modifier

An Unrevealed prefix or suffix added through Desecration and revealed as one of three choices at the Well of Souls. It uses an affix slot but does not count as the crafted modifier.

09
Unique item modifier

Part of a named Unique item's defined modifier set. Unique modifiers are not selected from the ordinary Rare affix pool and can include rules unavailable on ordinary equipment.

10
Increased, Reduced, More, and Less

Applicable Increased and Reduced values for the same stat form one additive pool. Applicable More and Less modifiers are separate multipliers. Modifier scope is checked before either calculation.

Limits and exceptions

7 rules
  • The raw weight divided by the whole table is not a universal crafting chance. Item level, open prefix and suffix slots, existing modifier groups, the selected currency, Omens, and special crafting systems can change the eligible pool.
  • Modifier weights are not published as official client data for Path of Exile 2. Imported community weight tables are estimates and should keep their source, game version, and check date.
  • Since version 0.5.0, an item can normally have one crafted modifier at a time. Desecrated modifiers do not count as crafted modifiers, but an item is normally limited to one Desecrated modifier.
  • The tier printed on an unidentified Rare drop affects the modifiers revealed by identification. It does not improve later crafting rolls on that item.
  • Flasks and non-unique relics remain Magic and are capped at two modifiers. Other item types or special bases can also use different affix limits.
  • Implicit modifiers, enchantments, and most special modifier families do not consume ordinary prefix or suffix slots unless their own rule explicitly says they do.
  • Unique item modifiers do not imply that the same text can roll as an ordinary Rare affix.
