Start from the guaranteed modifier table for the exact item type. Lesser, normal, and Greater Essences upgrade Magic items to Rare. Perfect and Corrupted Essences replace a random modifier on a Rare item with their guaranteed modifier.
- The exact item class and current rarity of the target.
- The guaranteed modifier wanted from the Essence table.
- A decision about which existing modifier can be risked when using a Perfect or Corrupted Essence.
Open the Essence page or the complete application table and select the target item type. The same Essence can grant different modifiers to weapons, armour, jewellery, and other targets.

- Do not infer an effect from the Essence name alone.

Omen of Dextral Crystallisation makes the next eligible Perfect or Corrupted Essence remove only a suffix. Omen of Sinistral Crystallisation makes it remove only a prefix. The Omen is consumed when triggered.
- Confirm that the exact Essence is eligible for the Omen.
- Activate only the Omen that protects the side of the item you need to keep.

Using a Vaal Orb on an imprisoned Essence monster changes the Essences held by that encounter. The monster encounter is the target. This is not the same as using a Vaal Orb directly on a Perfect Essence in the inventory.

- Treat the encounter state and the held Essence as separate parts of the process.
