Quick answer

Compare your character level with the effective monster level, not only the area label. The full-experience range is your character level plus or minus 3, with one additional level for every 16 complete character levels. Outside that range, use the Experience Level Penalty calculator to check the multiplier. In Map Device areas, a death separately removes up to 10% of the experience required for the current level.

Before you start

3 points
  • Your current character level and progress toward the next level.
  • The area level of the campaign zone or map you intend to run.
  • The monster rarity and any map effects that add monster levels when checking an exact monster.
1
Step 1

Find the full-experience level range

Start with a safe difference of 3. Add 1 for every 16 complete character levels. A level 40 character therefore has a safe difference of 5 and receives the full level multiplier from monsters at levels 35 through 45.

  • Use the character level, not the item level.
  • Round the character level down to a whole number before applying the formula.
  • Treat a monster on either boundary as inside the full-experience range.
2
Step 2

Determine the effective monster level

Normal monsters use the area level. Magic and Rare monsters are one level higher, and bosses are two levels higher. Irradiated or Corrupted map effects can add monster levels in endgame areas, so the same area can contain monsters with different effective levels.

  • Read the area level from the zone or map.
  • Add the monster rarity adjustment before comparing levels.
  • Include applicable map monster-level modifiers.

Step 3

Check the multiplier before repeating a zone

If the effective monster level is outside the safe range, calculate the level multiplier before choosing that zone for repeated experience. The multiplier measures the level-gap penalty only. Monster density, travel time, danger, and kill speed still determine how much experience the zone produces per minute.

  • Use the effective monster level from the previous step.
  • Compare several realistic areas instead of assuming the highest area level is best.
  • Do not treat the level multiplier as a complete experience-per-hour estimate.

Step 4

Check the XP required for the next level

Use the character experience table to see cumulative experience and the exact amount required for the next level. Enter the current progress percentage to calculate the remaining experience without estimating from the size of the bar.

  • Confirm the selected row matches the current character level.
  • Use the current level progress percentage for the remaining-XP calculation.
  • Remember that level 100 has no next-level requirement.
5
Step 5

Protect experience progress in endgame areas

A death in an area opened through a Map Device removes up to 10% of the experience required for the current level, but it cannot reduce the character's level. Omen of Amelioration prevents 75% of that loss when it can activate, reducing a normal 10% loss to 2.5%.

  • Distinguish the death penalty from the monster-level multiplier.
  • Use the death-loss calculator when the progress bar contains less than the nominal loss.
  • Do not expect the Omen to activate in a Pinnacle encounter that grants no experience.

Important limits

Full multiplier does not guarantee the fastest zone

The level formula does not account for monster density, route length, encounter danger, or the time the build needs to kill each pack.

Item level is a different system

Item level controls modifier eligibility and crafting. It can use the same area and monster-level inputs, but it is not the character level and does not set the character experience requirement.

Death loss cannot remove a completed level

The Map Device death penalty stops at zero progress for the current character level. It does not lower the character to the previous level.
