Item recycling

Complete Finding the Forge in Act 1 and return the Smithing Tools to Renly to unlock the Salvage Bench in towns and hideouts. Salvaging destroys the item. Quality equipment returns the currency for its item class, while each socket returns one Artificer's Shard. Any augment already placed in a socket is destroyed with the item.
The account unlock comes from Renly's optional Act 1 quest.

Eligible martial weapons return Blacksmith's Whetstones according to their quality.
Eligible wands, staves, and sceptres return Arcanist's Etchers according to their quality.
Eligible armour and off-hand items return Armourer's Scraps according to their quality.
Eligible flasks and charms return Glassblower's Baubles according to their quality.
The bench can return both reward types from the same eligible item.
The bench returns one matching quality currency for each 5% quality, with a chance for one more when the remaining quality is below the next 5% breakpoint.
Each socket on the destroyed item returns one Artificer's Shard. Ten shards combine into an Artificer's Orb.
Runes, Soul Cores, and other augments already placed in the sockets are destroyed and are not returned.
