Use an Artificer's Orb on eligible equipment that is below its socket limit, then right-click a Rune or other Augment and apply it to the item. To change a normal Augment later, apply the replacement to the occupied socket; the old Augment is destroyed. To recover non Socket-Bound Augments, use an Orb of Extraction, but the equipment is destroyed instead.
- Keep the equipment, Artificer's Orb, and intended Rune or other Augment in the inventory.
- Read every target-specific effect on the Augment before choosing the equipment slot.
- Check whether the Augment is Limited, Ancient, or Socket-Bound.
- Decide whether the equipment or the old Augment is more valuable before replacing or extracting.
Body armour and two-handed weapons normally support up to two Augment Sockets. Other armour, shields, foci, and weapons normally support one. Quivers and jewellery cannot receive a socket from an Artificer's Orb by default. Exceptional drops, corruption, and Unique modifiers can create special exceptions.
- Count the equipment's current Augment Sockets.
- Identify whether the weapon is one-handed or two-handed.
