Quick answer

Inspect the whole burial site before placing anything. Put valuable Remnants early enough for their highlighted Rune to affect later monsters, then route the remaining explosives through Runic Monster markers, valuable chests, and underground entrances. Choose every Runeshape before detonating. Expedition Logbooks reveal ocean islands, including at least one Grand Expedition, and the endgame quest proceeds through Medved, Vorana, Uhtred, Olroth, and The Aberration.

Starting point

4 points
  • An Expedition encounter in the campaign or Atlas, or an Expedition Logbook for the ocean route.
  • A build able to handle the extra monster effects shown by the selected Runes and area modifiers.
  • Enough inventory space for Runeforging currency, Logbooks, Sagas, Crests, and Remnant rewards.
  • For ocean progression, a completed Atlas map beside the southeastern ocean and access to the Ruins of Kingsmarch route.
1
Step 1

Inspect every marker before placing explosives

Start at the detonator and walk around the entire burial site. Triskelion banners mark excavated chests, double red flags mark Runic Monsters, Verisium Remnants hold Runeshape encounters, and some Grand Expeditions contain underground entrances or special interactables. Decide which targets matter before the first explosive fixes the route.

  • The valuable Runic Monster markers and chest markers have been identified.
  • Every reachable Verisium Remnant has been read.
  • Underground entrances and special Grand Expedition objects are included when present.

Step 2

Plan the connected explosive order

Each explosive must be placed within range of the detonator or the previous explosive. Its green radius shows which markers will be excavated. A Remnant affects targets uncovered by its own blast and later blasts, not earlier ones, so order the chain around the effects the build can survive and the rewards still remaining after that point.

  • Every explosive is connected to the previous point in the chain.
  • Early Remnants have enough later monsters or chests to make their propagated effect useful.
  • The final route covers Runic Monsters and valuable chests instead of spending every explosive on Remnants alone.
Tool

Expedition Atlas tree

Check whether the allocated tree changes explosive count, radius, monsters, or rewards.

3
Step 3

Choose a Runeshape for every Remnant

Open each Remnant and select a valid Runeshape using its existing Rune and available slots. The Runeshape determines the reward and the inscribed Runes empower its monster waves. If no recipe is selected before detonation, the Remnant chooses one randomly. The current interface highlights the Rune that will propagate to monsters uncovered by later explosives.

  • A specific reward recipe is selected instead of leaving the result random.
  • The build can survive every Rune effect added during the waves.
  • The highlighted propagated Rune is acceptable for all later monsters in the chain.

4
Step 4

Detonate and clear each blast

Activate the detonator after the route and Runeshapes are final. The chain waits until most monsters from the current blast are defeated before setting off the next explosive. Stay near the active excavation, kill dangerous Runic Monsters before the next group joins them, and finish every Remnant wave.

  • The route and every Runeshape were confirmed before detonation.
  • Most monsters from one blast are cleared before the next group is engaged.
  • No active Remnant wave or underground entrance is abandoned.
5
Step 5

Open chests and shatter completed Remnants

Open every excavated chest after its defenders are dead. Once all waves from a Verisium Remnant are cleared, shatter it to claim the selected Runeshape reward. Runic Monsters can drop Expedition Logbooks and Runeforging currency. Styrn, Fallen Knight of Aldur always drops a Logbook when encountered in the Tomb of the Fallen Knight.

  • Every excavated chest has been opened.
  • Every completed Remnant has been shattered for its selected reward.
  • Logbooks, Runes, Verisium, Crests, and other restricted drops have been collected.

Step 6

Use a Logbook to reveal ocean islands

At the ocean southeast of the Atlas starting area, consume an Expedition Logbook from an available Logbook Expedition node after completing a nearby map. The Logbook reveals several islands. Every revealed map contains Expedition and at least one is a Grand Expedition. Read the displayed rumours first because they identify some unique maps, bosses, and special encounters. Logbooks cannot be modified with currency.

  • A map beside the ocean reveal point has been completed.
  • The displayed rumours have been read before consuming the Logbook.
  • The revealed Grand Expedition and any boss island have been identified on the Atlas.

Step 7

Use Sagas to guarantee important islands

Activate a Saga in the inventory before consuming the next Expedition Logbook when a specific result is required. Medved's, Vorana's, Uhtred's, and Olroth's Sagas guarantee their matching boss encounter in the revealed biome. Aldur's Saga instead adds special modifiers to revealed Grand Expedition areas.

  • The intended Saga is active before the Logbook is consumed.
  • The resulting ocean area contains the guaranteed boss encounter.
  • Aldur's Saga is used for Grand Expedition modifiers, not to target a faction leader.
8
Step 8

Complete a Grand Expedition with 15 explosives

A current Grand Expedition is one large encounter with up to 15 placed explosives, additional markers, possible underground areas, and one or two Expedition map modifiers. Higher Waystone tiers can contain more Remnants. Inspect the whole map before routing because an early placement can decide which high-value chests, Remnants, and hidden areas remain reachable.

  • Both Expedition map modifiers have been read when two are present.
  • The route uses the current 15-explosive limit rather than an obsolete 20-explosive plan.
  • All excavated monsters are defeated so the map completes.
Mechanic

Step 9

Complete The Grand Expedition boss route

Follow the current ocean storyline through Medved, Vorana, Uhtred, and Olroth. Olroth drops the Shattered Triskelion. Runeforge it into The Triskelion Reforged, return to the Ruins of Kingsmarch, and speak to Makoru to reach the Fallen Star and challenge The Aberration. Each boss in this questline awards Expedition Atlas passive points.

  • Medved, Vorana, Uhtred, and Olroth have each been defeated.
  • The Shattered Triskelion has been Runeforged into The Triskelion Reforged.
  • The Triskelion Reforged has been used at the Fallen Star and The Aberration has been defeated.

Important limits

Remnant order only affects the same and later blasts

A useful Remnant placed near the end of the chain cannot improve monsters or chests already excavated. Put it earlier only when the build can handle its propagated Rune effect.

An unselected Runeshape becomes random

Detonating a Verisium Remnant without selecting a valid recipe causes it to choose one randomly. Select the reward and inspect every Rune before starting the chain.

Older Expedition guides describe a different system

The 0.5.0 update changed Logbooks into ocean exploration, replaced old Remnants with Runeshape Remnants, and removed the Expedition NPCs' old artifact crafting. The 0.5.3 update reduced Grand Expeditions from 20 explosives to 15.

Permanent-league availability is different during Runes of Aldur

The integrated Expedition mechanic is temporarily disabled in permanent leagues during Runes of Aldur. Campaign and current league encounters are separate from that permanent-league state.
