Chaos Surges

Chaos Surges are temporary stacks attached to the active weapon. Chaotic Surge is the triggered skill that grants those stacks, and eligible non-melee projectile Attacks spend them to add Chaos explosions at the end of projectile flight.

What Chaos Surges does

Current rules

Equip Spire of Ire and consume a Charge to trigger Chaotic Surge, gaining 2 Chaos Surges on that spear. The weapon can hold up to 6 Chaos Surges for 15 seconds. A non-melee projectile Attack made with that weapon consumes available stacks for the projectiles it fires. Each affected projectile creates a 1.8 metre blast that converts 100% of its Physical damage to Chaos damage when the projectile reaches the end of its flight.

Chaotic Surge grants Chaos Surges
The singular name is the skill and the plural name is the weapon state. Spire of Ire grants Chaotic Surge and triggers it whenever you Consume a Charge. Each trigger grants 2 Chaos Surges.
The weapon holds up to 6 stacks for 15 seconds
A weapon can have a maximum of 6 Chaos Surges by default. The stacks last 15 seconds and belong to the weapon that received them. Swapping weapons does not transfer those stacks to the other weapon set.
Only non-melee projectile Attacks spend the stacks
The consuming skill must be an Attack that fires projectiles and is not Melee. Spells, Melee Attacks, and non-weapon damage do not receive the Chaos Surge blast. The Attack must use the weapon that currently holds the stacks.
Each benefited projectile requires a stack
Available stacks determine how many projectiles from the use can gain a Surge blast. Version 0.4.0b fixed a bug that allowed more projectiles to benefit than the number of stacks held, so extra projectiles beyond the available stacks do not receive the blast.
The blast occurs at the end of projectile flight
A benefited projectile triggers the Chaotic Surge blast when it reaches the end of its flight. The blast has a 1.8 metre radius and converts 100% of its Physical damage to Chaos damage. Its Attack Damage scales with the level of the Chaotic Surge skill granted by Spire of Ire.
Split and Fork projectiles do not gain Surges
Projectiles created through Split or Fork do not gain the benefit of Chaos Surges. Adding either behavior can create more projectiles, but it does not copy the Surge blast onto those derived projectiles.
Chaotic Surge cannot Consume Charges
The triggered Chaotic Surge skill has Cannot Consume Charges. Its own blast therefore cannot spend another Charge to retrigger Spire of Ire. A separate eligible skill or effect must perform the Charge consumption that starts the cycle.
Chaos Surges are not Elemental Infusions or Arcane Surge
Content Update 0.3.0 renamed the original Chaotic Infusion skill to Chaotic Surge specifically to separate it from the Elemental Infusion mechanic. Chaos Surges are also unrelated to the Arcane Surge buff and to ordinary added Chaos damage.
Support Gems modify the granted blast skill
Chaotic Surge appears as an item-granted skill and can be supported according to its Attack, AoE, Trigger, and Chaos tags. Applicable supports modify the Surge blast, not the original projectile Attack unless that support also applies to the projectile skill separately.
