Chaos

Chaos is one of the five damage types. Chaos Resistance reduces it, and ordinary Chaos damage removes twice its damage value from Energy Shield instead of bypassing Energy Shield by default.

What Chaos does

Current rules

Separate Chaos Hits, Chaos damage over time, Poison, Energy Shield bypass, Withered, and Chaos Resistance. They interact, but none of those labels means all the others automatically apply.

Chaos Resistance
Chaos Resistance mitigates Chaos damage. Its default maximum is 75%, and Maximum Chaos Resistance cannot be raised above 90%.
Energy Shield multiplier
Chaos damage removes twice as much Energy Shield as its damage value. This does not mean all Chaos damage bypasses Energy Shield.
Bypass is effect-specific
Bleeding and Poison bypass Energy Shield to remove Life directly. That bypass belongs to those effects and must not be generalized to every Chaos Hit or Chaos damage-over-time effect.
Hit and damage over time
Chaos damage can be dealt by Hits or damage over time. Hit-only modifiers, Critical Hits, Block, and on-Hit effects do not apply to a pure Chaos damage-over-time component.
Withered
Each Withered stack applies 5% increased Chaos damage taken, up to 10 stacks, unless another source explicitly changes the current limit or effect.
Chaos Inoculation
Chaos Inoculation sets maximum Life to 1 and grants immunity to Chaos damage and Bleeding. It is a separate keystone rule, not a property of Chaos Resistance.

Chaos damage interactions

5 cases
01
Chaos Hit

Uses Hit rules, is mitigated by Chaos Resistance, and removes twice its damage value from Energy Shield.

Related: Hit, Chaos Resistance, Energy Shield
02
Chaos damage over time

Does not Hit and therefore cannot Critically Hit, be Blocked as a Hit, or activate on-Hit effects.

Related: Duration, Chaos Resistance
03
Poison

Deals Chaos damage over time and bypasses Energy Shield, but remains a distinct Ailment with its own application and Magnitude rules.

Related: Poison, Ailments
04
Withered

Raises Chaos damage taken by 5% per stack, up to 10 stacks under the current baseline rule.

Related: Withered
05
Chaos conversion

Changes the final damage type to Chaos for the converted portion. Source and delivery predicates such as Attack, Spell, Hit, or Projectile still remain relevant.

Limits and exceptions

4 rules
  • Chaos damage does not universally bypass Energy Shield. Ordinary Chaos damage removes Energy Shield at twice the damage value.
  • Poison is not every form of Chaos damage over time, and Chaos damage over time is not automatically Poison.
  • Withered increases Chaos damage taken but does not convert damage to Chaos or lower Chaos Resistance.
  • Chaos Resistance, increased Chaos damage taken, and damage conversion are separate stages of the damage calculation.
