What Herald does

Current rules

Choose a Herald whose condition your main Attack can satisfy consistently. Herald of Ash needs sufficient Overkill, Herald of Ice needs a Shatter from a non-Herald Attack Hit, Herald of Thunder starts from killing a Shocked enemy with a non-Herald Attack Hit, Herald of Plague needs a Poisoned enemy, and Herald of Blood needs actual Blood Loss. Herald kills cannot trigger Herald on-kill effects, so the explosions and bolts do not form an unlimited Herald chain.

Heralds are Persistent Buff Skills
Current engravable Heralds reserve Spirit while active and require a Martial Weapon. Their payoff remains enabled while the Buff is active and its specific trigger condition is met.
Every Herald has a different condition
Overkill, Shatter, Shocked-enemy kills, Poisoned-enemy kills, and Blood Loss are separate requirements. Activating one Herald does not make another Herald's condition true.
Herald kills do not chain Herald on-kill effects
On-kill effects from Herald Skills cannot trigger from kills caused by Herald Skills. A Herald explosion or bolt can kill enemies, but those kills do not start another Herald on-kill payoff.
Non-Herald Attack wording matters
Herald of Ash, Ice, and Thunder explicitly require qualifying non-Herald Attacks or Attack Hits. A Spell kill or a Herald's own damage does not satisfy wording restricted to a non-Herald Attack.
Triggered damage keeps its own tags
Herald of Ice, Thunder, and Blood create Attack damage components, while Herald of Ash creates an Ignite and Herald of Plague spreads Poison. Scale the actual component rather than assuming all Herald payoffs use weapon damage.
Reservation is part of the build cost
The ordinary Herald gems currently reserve 30 Spirit before applicable reservation modifiers. Supporting a Herald can raise its reservation according to the Support's cost multiplier.
Blood Loss requires damage over time to occur
Herald of Blood requires accumulated Blood Loss. An enemy killed from full Life by one Hit has not taken Physical damage over time, so it has no Blood Loss for the Herald explosion.
Herald-specific modifiers have narrow scope
Herald Damage, Herald Area, Herald Reservation Efficiency, and bonuses while affected by a particular Herald apply only according to their wording. A bonus to your Fire Damage while affected by Herald of Ash is not the same modifier as Herald of Ash dealing increased damage.

Herald triggers, payoffs, and build support

7 cases
01
Herald of Ash

Sufficient Overkill from a non-Herald Attack causes an explosion that Ignites nearby enemies. Its base Ignite damage is derived from the Overkill damage stated by the Skill.

Related: Herald of Ash, Overkill, Ignite, Attack
02
Herald of Ice

Shattering an enemy with a non-Herald Attack Hit creates a Cold Attack explosion around the enemy. The explosion cannot be evaded.

Related: Herald of Ice, Shatter, Hit
03
Herald of Thunder

Killing a Shocked enemy with a non-Herald Attack Hit empowers subsequent Attack Hits to release Lightning bolts around their targets.

Related: Herald of Thunder, Shock, Lightning, Hit
04
Herald of Plague

Killing a Poisoned enemy spreads its Poison to nearby enemies and can also Hinder them. It spreads the existing Poison rather than creating a universal Herald Hit.

Related: Herald of Plague, Poison, Hindered
06
Deadly Herald

Makes supported Herald triggered effects deal more damage, but raises their Spirit reservation through its cost multiplier.

Related: Deadly Herald, Spirit, Reservation
