Instilling

Instilling adds an enchantment that allocates a Notable Passive Skill while an eligible item is equipped. The current amulet process uses three regular Liquid Emotions at the crafting bench in The Withered Willow.

What Instilling does

Step-by-step guide

Place an eligible Amulet or Raven-Touched item and three regular Liquid Emotions into the instilling bench at The Withered Willow. The exact types and order of the three emotions determine the Notable Passive Skill. The allocated Notable works while the item is equipped, but allocating the same Notable on the Passive Skill Tree does not grant its effects twice.

Three emotions determine the Notable
Instilling an Amulet or Raven-Touched item consumes three regular Liquid Emotions. Both the emotion types and their arrangement are part of the recipe, so the order shown for a Notable must be preserved.
Use the bench in The Withered Willow
The item and three emotions are placed in the instilling crafting bench at The Withered Willow. The bench can show Notables available from the Liquid Emotions in the player's inventory.
The same Notable does not stack
An Instilled Notable grants its effects as though it were allocated, but allocating that same Notable normally on the Passive Skill Tree does not grant a second copy of its effects.
One enchantment is the normal limit
An eligible item normally has one Instilled enchantment. Instilling it again replaces the existing enchantment. If an item can hold several Instilled enchantments, one of them is replaced at random.
Some items change the limit
Strugglescream can have three additional Instilled Modifiers, for four in total including the normal one. Distorted Amulets and Twisted Amulets instead drop with two random Instilled Notables and a reduced affix limit.
Raven-Touched expands eligible item types
Raven-Touched allows an item to be Instilled with a Notable Passive Skill. Raven-Touched Shard applies that modifier to a Helmet through an Augment Socket and is Socket-bound.
Liquid Emotions also craft Jewels
Using one regular Liquid Emotion directly on a Rare Basic Jewel removes a random modifier and adds the emotion's guaranteed Crafted modifier. This Jewel craft is separate from the three-emotion Instilling recipe.
Ancient emotions are for Time-Lost Jewels
Ancient Liquid Emotions remove a random modifier and add a guaranteed Crafted modifier to a Rare Time-Lost Jewel. They cannot replace regular Liquid Emotions in an Instilling recipe.
Some Notables exist only through Instilling
Certain three-emotion combinations allocate Notables that are not present on the normal Passive Skill Tree. Potent Liquid Emotions introduced additional exclusive Notables in version 0.5.0.

Instill-only Notables

Some recipes grant Notables that cannot be allocated on the normal tree. The recipe still consumes three regular Liquid Emotions and the granted effect still cannot stack with another allocation of the same Notable.

Limits and exceptions

7 rules
  • Ancient Liquid Emotions craft Time-Lost Jewels and cannot substitute for regular Liquid Emotions in an Instilling recipe.
  • An Instilled Notable does not grant its effects twice when the same Notable is also allocated on the Passive Skill Tree.
  • The normal limit is one Instilled enchantment unless the item explicitly changes that limit.
  • An Instilled enchantment can be replaced but cannot currently be removed without adding another Instilled enchantment.
  • An Instilled enchantment cannot be replaced on a Corrupted, Mirrored, or Sanctified item.
  • Waystone Instilling is a legacy rule from before version 0.4.0 and is not the current use of Liquid Emotions.
  • Using one Liquid Emotion on a Jewel is a modifier craft, not the three-emotion Notable recipe.
