Sacrifice
Sacrifice removes a stated amount of Life, Mana, Energy Shield, Runic Ward, or another named resource to produce an effect. The loss is not damage and the sacrificed amount is not part of a skill's cost.Catalog version 0.5.4d

What Sacrifice does
Current rulesA Sacrifice succeeds only when the required resource can be removed. Sacrificing your own Life cannot reduce you below 1 Life, but sacrificing Life from another entity, such as a Minion, can kill that entity. Read the exact effect for the resource, amount, target, and reward because Sacrifice is a loss method, not one universal skill.
- Sacrifice is resource loss, not damage
- The sacrificed amount is removed directly. It does not count as taking damage, so effects that prevent, mitigate, or react to damage do not automatically apply to the Sacrifice.
- The sacrificed amount is not a skill cost
- A skill can have its normal Mana, Life, or other cost and also require a Sacrifice. Cost Efficiency and effects that track resources spent on skill costs do not automatically change or count the separate sacrificed amount.
- The resource must be available
- You cannot Sacrifice a resource you do not have. If an effect promises a reward only when a stated Sacrifice is fully made, having too little of that resource prevents that reward.
- Your own Life stops at 1
- Sacrificing your own Life cannot reduce you below 1 Life. This floor does not let an effect pretend that a larger required Sacrifice was fully made.
- Another entity can die from sacrificed Life
- The self-Life floor applies to the player causing the Sacrifice, not to another entity whose Life is sacrificed. A Minion can be reduced to zero Life and die from a Sacrifice applied to it.
- Life, Mana, and Energy Shield use the same keyword rules
- The named resource changes, but the basic distinction remains: direct resource loss, not damage and not a skill cost. Demon Stitcher uses Life, Font of Power and The Black Doubt use Mana, and Eldritch Empowerment uses Energy Shield.
- Runic Ward can be produced or sacrificed
- Animus Exchange sacrifices Life and recovers Runic Ward based on the Life actually sacrificed. Hollow Shell goes the other direction by sacrificing its Runic Ward to grant Guard to nearby allies.
- Sacrifice the Spirit skill is a separate subject
- The Persistent Spirit skill named Sacrifice lets eligible corpse-targeting skills use undead Reviving Minions in place of Corpses and makes Minions revive more slowly. It does not replace the keyword definition, and the corpse-using skill still determines how and when its target is consumed.
- Corpse sacrifice is not the player Life floor
- Ritual Sacrifice can sacrifice the Corpse of a Rare Monster to grant its modifiers. That removes the corpse entity. Its alternate self-powered use is a separate effect and must be read from the skill rather than treated as the same target rule.

Related: Minion, Corpses, Reviving Minions, Sacrifice Spirit skillThe Last Lament sacrifices 300 Life to avoid consuming the last loaded bolt. Since 0.4.0, it only preserves that bolt when the character actually sacrifices the Life, so the 1-Life floor cannot produce the reward for free.
Related: The Last Lament, Content Update 0.4.0Version 0.4.0 changed the named Sacrifice Spirit skill's revive penalty and clarified The Last Lament's fully made requirement. Version 0.4.0b corrected Eldritch Empowerment's displayed damage value from 5% to 30%; that correction was descriptive rather than a mechanic change.
