Energy Shield
Energy Shield is a rechargeable defensive resource that normally protects Life. Damage is mitigated first, then removes Energy Shield before Life unless the damage or another effect explicitly bypasses it.Catalog version 0.5.4d
No direct 0.5 patch change is linked to this page. The displayed values are current for catalog version 0.5.4d.
What Energy Shield does
Current rulesNormal Energy Shield recharge starts after 4 seconds without losing Life or Energy Shield and restores 12.5% of maximum Energy Shield each second. Losing either resource interrupts recharge. Chaos damage removes Energy Shield at twice its damage value, while Bleeding and Poison bypass Energy Shield and damage Life directly.
- Mitigation happens before Energy Shield loss
- Armour, Resistances and other applicable mitigation calculate the final damage first. That damage then removes Energy Shield before Life unless an effect changes the order or bypasses Energy Shield.
- Base recharge delay is 4 seconds
- Recharge begins after 4 seconds without losing Life or Energy Shield. Any new loss of Life or Energy Shield interrupts recharge and starts the delay again.
- Base recharge rate is 12.5% per second
- Normal recharge restores 12.5% of maximum Energy Shield each second. With no rate modifiers, an empty Energy Shield pool takes 8 seconds to fill after recharge begins.
- Recharge is not regeneration
- Recharge and regeneration are separate recovery methods. Modifiers to recharge delay or recharge rate do not improve Energy Shield regeneration unless they explicitly say so.
- Chaos damage removes twice as much Energy Shield
- Chaos damage removes twice as much Energy Shield as its damage value. This multiplier affects only Energy Shield removed, not Life or Mana removed by the same damage instance.
- Bleeding and Poison bypass Energy Shield
- Damage from Bleeding and Poison bypasses Energy Shield and removes Life directly unless another effect changes that interaction.
- Faster start has diminishing returns
- The recharge delay equals 4 seconds divided by one plus the total faster start rate as a decimal. For example, 100% faster start reduces the delay to 2 seconds.
- Conversions can change the defensive pool
- Some items and passive skills convert Life or change what resource recharges. Read the exact effect before comparing the resulting pool with a normal Energy Shield setup.

Limits and exceptions
7 rules- Energy Shield is a resource pool, not a percentage reduction to incoming damage.
- Taking damage does not interrupt recharge unless it causes Life or Energy Shield loss.
- Bleeding and Poison bypass Energy Shield by default.
- Chaos damage removes Energy Shield at twice its damage value.
- Energy Shield recharge and regeneration are separate forms of recovery.
- Recharge delay and recharge rate are different modifiers.
- An empty Energy Shield pool does not begin refilling immediately without a special effect.
