What Slow does

Current rules

Read the exact wording first. A movement Slow only affects movement. An attack speed Slow only affects attacks. A Slow with no named speed affects action speed, so it lengthens the target's animations. Different Slows multiply with one another. Their effect is reduced against Magic, Rare, and Unique monsters, and no monster can be slowed below 25% of its base speed.

The wording defines what is slowed
A Slow that names movement speed changes movement only. A Slow that names attack speed changes attacks only. If no speed is named, it applies to everything the affected entity does.
Different Slows multiply
Slows do not add their percentages together. Two 30% movement Slows leave 49% of the original movement speed before reductions to Slow effect: 0.70 multiplied by 0.70.
Enemy rarity reduces Slow effect
Magic monsters have 15% less Slow effect on them, Rare monsters have 30% less, and Unique monsters have 50% less.
Party size further reduces Slow effect
Monsters have 10% less Slow effect on them for each player in the area beyond the first, up to 50% less in a six-player party.
Monsters have a speed floor
A monster cannot be slowed below 25% of its base speed. Additional Slows cannot push it below that floor.
Slow Magnitude scales only the Slow
When a Debuff has several effects, Slow Magnitude changes only the magnitude that slows the target. It does not scale the Debuff's other penalties.

Effect by item type

4 cases

02
Maim

Slows movement speed by 30% and reduces Evasion Rating by 15% for 4 seconds unless another duration is specified.

Related: Maim, Evasion
03
Chill

A Cold ailment whose magnitude slows the target. Chill has its own magnitude and duration rules.

Related: Chill, Ailments

Limits and exceptions

4 rules
  • Slow is not one named debuff. It is an effect used by Hinder, Maim, Chill, Temporal Chains, and other sources.
  • Pin, Freeze, Heavy Stun, and Electrocution are immobilising effects. They are not interchangeable with a movement Slow.
  • A target that is unaffected by Slows can still have a Slow debuff placed on it, but the Slow does not change its speed.
  • Immunity to Hinder or Maim prevents that named debuff. It is narrower than being unaffected by every Slow.
