Wind Skills

Wind is a Skill tag used by attacks and spells with wind-specific interactions. The tag does not provide one shared damage type or behaviour: current Wind Skills include Melee attacks, Projectiles, damage over time, Whirlwinds, Tornados, and Shapeshift attacks.

What Wind Skills does

Current rules

Use the Wind tag to determine whether a Wind-specific support, item, or interaction applies, then read the Skill's other tags and components. Whirling Slash and Whirlwind Lance create staged Whirlwinds that Blind and Slow, Twister consumes Whirlwinds for additional projectiles, Tornado Shot copies eligible projectiles through a Tornado, and Tornado absorbs allied Elemental Ground. A Skill with wind in its name is not automatically a Wind Skill.

Wind is a Skill tag
Wind identifies Skills that can receive Wind-specific interactions. The tag does not by itself make a Skill an Attack, Spell, Melee Skill, Projectile, Hit, or damage-over-time effect.
Damage and delivery remain skill-specific
Current Wind Skills can deal Physical or Elemental damage, Hit or deal damage over time, and use Melee, Projectile, Spell, Attack, or Shapeshift rules. Scale only the components whose tags and wording match.
Whirlwinds are a distinct object
Whirling Slash and Whirlwind Lance create Whirlwinds. A Whirlwind Blinds and Slows enemies inside it, then collapses for Melee damage and Knockback when its creator crosses its edge.
Overlapping Whirlwinds add stages
Creating a Whirlwind where one already exists moves the existing Whirlwind and adds a stage instead of creating an overlapping copy. Stages increase its radius, collapse damage, and Knockback distance, up to the applicable maximum.
Elemental Ground can empower Wind effects
A Whirlwind overlapping allied Ignited, Chilled, or Shocked Ground takes on that element for eight seconds, gains damage as the corresponding element, and applies that Ground Surface's Debuff inside it.
Twister consumes Whirlwinds
A Twister touching one of your Whirlwinds consumes it to create additional Twisters with more damage. Elemental Ground or an elemental Whirlwind can also grant the Twisters extra damage of that element.
Tornado interactions are different
Tornado Shot creates a Tornado that copies eligible arrows, thrown Spears, and Crossbow bolts. The Tornado Spell instead deals Physical damage over time and absorbs an allied Elemental Ground Surface.
Names do not determine the tag
Wind Dancer and Daevata's Wind contain the word wind but do not receive Wind Skill modifiers without the Wind tag. Staggering Palm's created projectiles are Wind effects even though the base Skill has several other tags.

Wind Skills and their distinct interactions

7 cases
01
Whirling Slash

Creates a Whirlwind around you. Leaving it collapses the Whirlwind, while recasting into an overlap adds a stage to the existing Whirlwind.

Related: Whirling Slash, Staged, Blind, Slow, Knockback
02
Whirlwind Lance

Creates a Whirlwind where the thrown Spear lands. It can consume a Frenzy Charge to create the Whirlwind above its normal maximum stage count.

Related: Whirlwind Lance, Frenzy Charge, Projectile
03
Twister

Moves erratically while repeatedly Hitting and Blinding. Consuming a Whirlwind creates additional, stronger Twisters, and elemental surfaces can add matching damage.

Related: Twister, Hit, Elemental Ground Surfaces
04
Tornado Shot

Creates a Tornado that deals Physical damage over time, Hinders enemies, and copies eligible projectiles fired into it. A copied projectile cannot be copied again.

Related: Tornado Shot, Projectile, Hindered, Physical
05
Tornado

Creates a Wind and Storm Spell that pulls enemies and deals Physical damage over time. It absorbs an allied Elemental Ground Surface and applies that Debuff in its area.

Related: Tornado, Storm, Elemental Ground Surfaces, Debuffs
06
Direct Wind attacks

Wind Blast Dazes and Knocks Back by distance. Wind Serpent's Fury spends Frenzy Charges for following serpents. Wing Blast uses a Wyvern wingbeat and interacts with enemies Primed for Heavy Stun.

Related: Wind Blast, Wind Serpent's Fury, Wing Blast, Dazes, Heavy Stun
07
Elemental Ground items

Berek's Pass, Berek's Respite, and Berek's Grip make eligible Wind Skills count as boosted by a stated Ground Surface. The Taming expands the interaction to multiple surfaces.

Limits and exceptions

6 rules
  • Wind does not specify one damage type.
  • Wind does not mean every component is a Hit, Projectile, Attack, Spell, or Melee effect.
  • A name containing Wind or Storm does not grant the Wind tag.
  • Copied projectiles from Tornado Shot cannot be copied again.
  • Whirlwind stages and the number of active Whirlwinds are separate limits.
  • Only allied Elemental Ground can empower the described Wind interactions.
