Abyss
Abyss is a fissure encounter found from Act 2 onward and in maps. Follow the moving fissure, defeat the monsters linked to it, close each pit, and claim the reward at the end of the chain.Catalog version 0.5.4d
No direct 0.5 patch change is linked to this page. The displayed values are current for catalog version 0.5.4d.
What Abyss does
Current rulesStay near the opening fissure and kill the weakened monsters it marks. Follow the fissure to each new pit, defeat the Abyssal waves before the encounter escapes, then continue until the chain closes. The final pit can produce an Abyssal Trove or, in maps, an entrance to Abyssal Depths. Abyssal bosses can drop Kulemak's Invitation.
- Follow the fissure
- An Abyss begins as a crack in the ground. Move with it as it travels and opens pits. Leaving the encounter behind can cause it to escape before the reward appears.
- Kill the marked monsters
- The fissure drains nearby monsters and Abyssal enemies take the drained power. Defeat those enemies to advance the encounter and close the current pit.
- Finish the chain
- A completed chain ends with an Abyssal Trove or another Abyss reward. In maps, the final pit can instead open an entrance to Abyssal Depths.
- Use the Well of Souls
- The Well of Souls is reached through the Lightless Passage in Act 2. It reveals Desecrated modifiers and is also where Kulemak's Invitation is used to enter the Black Cathedral.
- Control map encounters
- An Abyss Tablet adds Abysses to maps affected by a completed Tower. Its modifiers can change the number of encounters and their rewards.

Limits and exceptions
4 rules- Not every final pit in a map opens Abyssal Depths.
- Kulemak's Invitation is used from the inventory at the Well of Souls, not in the Map Device.
- Taking an early Vessel reward ends that encounter. The Abyssal Lich path requires all three empowerments and the full Vessel fight.
- Abyssal can also appear as a monster or modifier tag. That tag is related to the system but is not itself a complete Abyss encounter.
