Detonator

Detonator is a Skill tag for Skills that can trigger flammable gas, Oil, Grenades, lodged explosives, and similar effects when the Skill reaches them. The target effect defines what is consumed or activated and what the resulting explosion, Ignite, volley, or secondary effect does.

What Detonator does

Current rules

Check for the Detonator tag on the Skill, then read the target effect. Explosive Shot can detonate nearby Grenades, Gas clouds can explode when touched by a Detonator or valid Burning effect, Oil can Ignite when touched by a Detonator or Ignited Ground, and lodged Spears can release their own stored effect. A timed explosive can also detonate when its Detonation Time ends, which is a separate rule from being touched by another Detonator.

Detonator is a Skill tag
The tag identifies Skills that participate in Detonator interactions and can receive modifiers scoped to Detonator Skills. A normal explosion without that tag is not automatically a Detonator.
The target defines the outcome
Detonator does not provide one universal explosion. Gas, Oil, Grenades, lodged Spears, Corpses, Minions, and other effects each define what happens when detonated.
Gas has two broad trigger families
Flammable Poison gas from Gas Grenade, Gas Arrow, or Decompose can explode when reached by a Detonator Skill or by the valid Burning interaction stated on that gas effect.
Oil is Ignited rather than merely removed
Detonator Skills or Ignited Ground can Ignite enemies and ground covered in Oil. The Oil is removed, but its Exposure remains for the duration of that Ignite under the current Oil rule.
Grenades can explode before their fuse ends
Most Grenades can be detonated early when reached by a Detonator Skill. The Grenade still uses its own damage, area, and secondary effect.
Detonation Time is a separate timer
A Skill with Detonation Time detonates when that time expires even without another Detonator. Detonation Time is not affected by ordinary duration modifiers.
Some lodged effects can be detonated
Explosive Spear detonates at the end of its timer or when detonated. Storm Lance releases a volley and expires when detonated. Rapid Assault leaves spearheads that Detonator Skills can explode.
Detonator modifiers affect the tagged Skill
Passive modifiers such as Detonator Area of Effect or Detonator Damage apply to the tagged Skill according to their wording. They do not necessarily scale every separate target effect that the Skill causes to activate.

Detonator Skills and target effects

7 cases
02
Gas cloud targets

Gas Grenade, Gas Arrow, and Decompose create flammable Poison gas. Read each Skill for its cloud duration, damage, and explosion values.

Related: Gas Grenade, Gas Arrow, Decompose
03
Oil target

Oil Grenade creates Oil that Slows and applies Exposure. Detonator contact or Ignited Ground Ignites the Oil-covered target and removes the Oil while its Exposure remains during the Ignite.

Related: Oil Grenade, Exposure, Ignite
04
Spear effects

Explosive Spear can be detonated before its timer ends. Storm Lance releases its stored volley and expires. Rapid Assault spearheads explode when reached by a Detonator Skill.

Related: Explosive Spear, Storm Lance, Rapid Assault
05
Corpse and Minion skills

Detonate Dead consumes a Corpse for its explosion. Skeletal Arsonist commands can detonate eligible Minions. Their target requirements and damage calculations remain skill-specific.

Related: Detonate Dead, Skeletal Arsonist, Corpses, Minion
06
Other tagged Skills

Detonating Arrow, Flame Breath, Rolling Magma, and Thunderous Leap currently carry Detonator relationships, but each activates only the effects described by its own wording and the target effect.

Related: Detonating Arrow, Flame Breath, Rolling Magma, Thunderous Leap
07
Timed detonations

Explosive Spear and Toxic Growth have a Detonation Time and can detonate when that timer ends. Short Fuse and Long Fuse style modifiers change that timer through explicit Detonation Time wording.

Limits and exceptions

5 rules
  • A Skill name containing explosion or detonate does not replace the Detonator tag and target wording.
  • Detonator is not one universal damage calculation.
  • Ordinary Skill Effect Duration does not change Detonation Time.
  • Detonating another effect does not automatically transfer every modifier from the Detonator Skill to that effect.
  • Gas, Oil, Grenades, Corpses, Minions, and lodged effects have different consumption and activation rules.
