Grenade

Grenade Skills are Crossbow attacks with cooldown uses and a fuse. They bounce along a terrain-dependent trajectory and normally detonate when the fuse expires. Most can be detonated early by contact with a Detonator Skill, and Grenades cannot Fork or Chain.

What Grenade does

Current rules

Equip a Crossbow, fire the Grenade where the target will be when its fuse ends, and use a Detonator Skill when you need the explosion sooner. Cooldown Recovery Rate controls how quickly uses return. Detonation Time controls the fuse. Projectile count controls how many Grenades are fired, while the individual Grenade Skill determines its damage, area, secondary effect, and whether it leaves gas, oil, mini Grenades, or another payload.

Grenades require a Crossbow
Grenade Skills are usable only while wielding a Crossbow. They are a separate Crossbow skill family from Ammunition Skills and do not use the Ammunition reload loop.
Cooldown and fuse are separate timers
A Grenade Skill spends a cooldown use when fired. Its Grenades then remain in the world until their fuse ends or another valid interaction detonates them. Cooldown Recovery Rate does not shorten Detonation Time.
Aim for the future target position
Grenades travel, bounce, and wait for their fuse before exploding. Their path is strongly affected by terrain, so walls, ledges, and uneven ground can change where they stop.
Multiple Grenades vary slightly
When one use fires multiple Grenades, their travel distance has a small random variation. Content Update 0.2.0 added this variation and reduced the spread of multi-projectile Grenade Skills except Cluster Grenade.
Grenades cannot Fork or Chain
Although Grenades are Projectiles, they cannot Fork or Chain. Modifiers to Grenade projectile count, travel, speed, bounce, or landing behaviour must explicitly apply through another rule.
Most Grenades can detonate early
A Detonator Skill that reaches a Grenade can normally make it explode before its fuse ends. This changes the timing, not the Grenade Skill's own damage type or secondary effects.
Detonation Time is not Skill Effect Duration
Modifiers to Detonation Time change when a timed explosive detonates. Ordinary duration modifiers do not change Detonation Time unless their wording separately modifies the relevant timer.
Each Grenade has its own payload
Explosive Grenade deals a Fire explosion, Flash Grenade focuses on Blind and Stun, Voltaic Grenade enables Electrocution buildup, Gas Grenade creates flammable Poison gas, Oil Grenade covers enemies and ground in Oil, and Cluster Grenade releases mini Grenades.

Grenade skills, supports, and equipment

7 cases
01
Direct damage Grenades

Explosive Grenade delivers a Fire blast. Cluster Grenade throws out a ring of mini Grenades. Voltaic Grenade creates a Lightning blast that enables Lightning Hits to build Electrocution for a duration.

02
Utility Grenades

Flash Grenade creates a Blinding, Stunning explosion. Patch 0.2.0g removed its ability to Blind the user or Allies.

Related: Flash Grenade, Blind
03
Gas and Oil

Gas Grenade leaves flammable Poison gas that Burning effects or Detonator Skills can explode. Oil Grenade covers enemies and ground in Oil that Ignited Ground or Detonator Skills can Ignite.

Related: Gas Grenade, Oil Grenade, Detonator
04
Adhesive Grenades

Adhesive Grenades supports stop supported Grenades from bouncing and make them halt where they first land. The tier and current wording determine any damage or cooldown tradeoff.

Related: Adhesive Grenades I, Adhesive Grenades II
05
Payload

Payload gives fired Grenades a chance to activate again but lengthens the supported Skill's cooldown. The extra activation and slower use recovery are separate outcomes.

06
Mortar Cannon

Mortar Cannon creates a Ballista Totem that uses Grenade Skills socketed in it and grants them substantially improved Cooldown Recovery Rate.

07
Crossbow bases and Redemption

Bombard, Cannonade, and Siege Crossbows fire an additional Grenade projectile. Redemption builds Explosive Rhythm from Grenade Skill uses and converts ten stacks into Explosive Fervour.

Limits and exceptions

5 rules
  • Grenade Skills require a Crossbow.
  • Cooldown Recovery Rate and Detonation Time modify different timers.
  • Grenades cannot Fork or Chain.
  • Projectile count does not change what the Grenade's payload does.
  • A Detonator changes explosion timing only when the Grenade and Detonator interaction is valid.
