What Elemental Ground Surfaces does

Current rules

Check the creating skill or item first. It determines whether the surface is allied or hostile, how long it lasts, and whether it replaces a default value. A detrimental surface normally does not affect its creator or allies, but skills that explicitly interact with Elemental Ground Surfaces can still use eligible allied or enemy surfaces.

Three elemental surfaces
Ignited Ground repeatedly applies Flammability and begins Igniting at 50% total Flammability. Chilled Ground applies Chill. Shocked Ground applies Shock.
Ownership controls ordinary effects
A detrimental ground effect does not normally affect its creator or the creator's allies. A beneficial ground effect does not normally affect enemies unless it also has a detrimental component.
Explicit skill interactions can use surfaces
Some player and minion skills explicitly absorb, pass over, or count Elemental Ground Surfaces. The skill wording determines whether an enemy surface is eligible and what bonus it grants.
Creating and counting are different
Berek's Pass, Berek's Respite, and Berek's Grip do not create ground. They make eligible Wind Skills count as being boosted by Chilled, Ignited, or Shocked Ground respectively.
Multiple surface boosts require explicit permission
The Taming makes eligible Wind Skills count as boosted by all three elemental surfaces and lets those skills receive multiple Elemental Ground Surface boosts. Without such wording, do not assume the three bonuses stack.

Limits and exceptions

3 rules
  • An Elemental Ground Surface is not automatically a damaging area. Its named effect and creating source determine what it applies.
  • The ground's duration, radius, ailment value, and damage basis can be replaced by the wording on the creating skill or item.
  • A ring that makes a Wind Skill count as boosted by a surface does not create that surface on the map.
