Nova

Nova is a skill tag for effects that spread through a circular area around a centre point, normally the skill user. The tag describes the effect's shape and origin pattern. It does not by itself say that the skill deals damage, uses an element, or covers a solid circle.

What Nova does

Current rules

A Nova normally takes effect around the character or other entity using the skill. Read the individual skill for exceptions: Ice Nova can originate from a targeted Frostbolt, Dark Pact forms around the sacrificed minion, and Shockwave Totem slams around the totem. Some Novas are rings with an empty centre, while others create ground, objects, buffs, or other effects instead of dealing direct damage.

Nova describes a circular effect
The Nova keyword says that the skill takes effect in a circular area around its user. The centre and exact affected area still come from the skill's own description and stats.
The user is not always your character
A totem using a Nova creates it around the totem. Dark Pact creates its area around the minion whose life it sacrifices, or around your character when no minion is available. Skill-specific origin rules take priority over the general keyword.
A skill can move the origin
Ice Nova normally originates from your character, but targeting near a Frostbolt causes the Nova to originate from that projectile. Since update 0.5.0, it cannot originate from a Frostbolt while cascading sideways.
Nova does not guarantee damage
The tag does not specify a damage type and does not guarantee a damaging hit. Consecrate creates Consecrated Ground, Hollow Shell grants Guard to allies, and Frostflame Nova modifies active Ignites and Freeze buildup without its wave dealing direct damage.
The area can be a ring
Nova does not always mean every point from the centre to the outer edge is affected. Enervating Nova has a 1 metre inner radius and a 2.6 metre outer radius. Enemies inside the empty centre take no damage, while damage increases with distance through the ring up to 100% more at its far edge.
Nova and Area of Effect are different tags
Current Nova skills also use the AoE tag because their effects occupy an area, but AoE is much broader and includes cones, ground patches, explosions, and other shapes. Area modifiers can scale the applicable area or area damage without changing where a skill says its Nova originates.
Nova Projectiles is a separate pattern
Nova Projectiles I and II support Projectile skills and make their projectiles fire in a circle. The supports have Projectile tags, not the Nova skill tag. They change the projectile firing pattern and do not turn the supported skill's other effects into Nova effects.

Nova origins and effect patterns

8 cases
01
Character-centred damaging Nova

Ice Nova normally sends a Cold wave out from your character. Enervating Nova creates a Lightning ring whose centre deals no damage. Bone Cage raises a ring of spikes that damage and Pin enemies when touched.

02
Remote or source-centred Nova

Ice Nova can move to a targeted Frostbolt, Dark Pact forms around the life-sacrificed minion, and Shockwave Totem repeatedly Slams around the totem. These are explicit skill rules, not a general ability to place any Nova remotely.

Related: Ice Nova, Frostbolt, Dark Pact, Shockwave Totem
03
Ground, buff, and utility Nova

Consecrate creates Consecrated Ground around you. Hollow Shell spends Runic Ward to grant Guard to nearby allies. Feast of Flesh consumes nearby corpses. Their Nova tag describes the circular area used to apply the effect.

Related: Consecrate, Hollow Shell, Feast of Flesh
05
Stored or staged Nova

Flameblast expands while channelled before exploding. Iron Ward stores prevented Physical damage before releasing spikes. Plague Bearer stores Poison damage before unleashing it around you. Nova describes the release area, not how the resource is built.

Related: Flameblast, Iron Ward, Plague Bearer
06
Non-damaging elemental interaction

Frostflame Nova deals no direct damage. Its wave attaches to Ignited enemies, refreshes their current Ignite, rapidly Freezes them, and prevents another Ignite until that Ignite expires.

07
Projectile circle support

Nova Projectiles I fires supported projectiles in a circle. Nova Projectiles II also adds six projectiles, gives the supported skill an 8 second cooldown, and makes it deal 50% less damage. Skills that rain projectiles from above are excluded, and version II cannot support a skill that already has a cooldown.

Limits and exceptions

5 rules
  • Nova alone does not specify damage, damage type, ailment, duration, hit behavior, target limit, or exact radius.
  • Not every Area of Effect skill is a Nova. AoE includes many non-circular and non-user-centred effects.
  • Not every Nova covers a solid disk. A skill can use a ring, a line of placed objects, or another skill-specific circular pattern.
  • A Nova only originates from a projectile, minion, totem, or other remote source when the skill or another applicable effect explicitly says so.
  • Nova Projectiles changes how projectiles are fired. Its name does not give the supported skill the Nova tag.
