Stun

Stun interrupts the target's current action and briefly prevents it from acting. Path of Exile 2 has two related systems: Light Stun is rolled from the damage of one Hit, while Heavy Stun is caused by filling a separate buildup bar.

What Stun does

Current rules

For Light Stun, compare the Hit's stun-effective damage with the target's Stun Threshold. A Hit equal to the threshold has 100% base chance, while current chances below 15% are discarded. Heavy Stun instead accumulates buildup from non-Cold Hit damage until the bar fills. Physical and Melee damage have special multipliers, and a Physical Melee Hit from a player has 125% more Light Stun chance and Heavy Stun buildup.

Light Stun checks one Hit
Any damaging Hit can potentially cause a Light Stun. The base chance scales linearly with stun-effective damage relative to the target's Stun Threshold, reaching 100% when the damage equals the threshold.
Light Stun chances below 15% are discarded
After the applicable chance modifiers are calculated, a Light Stun chance below 15% is treated as 0%. This current floor was established in version 0.3.0.
Heavy Stun uses buildup
Non-Cold damage from Hits adds Heavy Stun buildup. Filling the target's bar interrupts it for a longer Heavy Stun rather than rolling the Light Stun chance for that result.
Player Physical and Melee multipliers stack multiplicatively
Player Physical damage has 50% more Light Stun chance and Heavy Stun buildup. Player Melee damage also has 50% more. A Physical Melee Hit therefore has 1.5 times 1.5, or 2.25 times, the effectiveness of a Hit with neither property.
Monster Physical and Melee multipliers are different
Monster Physical damage has 100% more Light Stun chance and Heavy Stun buildup, while monster Melee damage has 33% more. These multipliers are also multiplicative, so do not use the player's 50% values for incoming Hits.
Primed for Stun is an enemy buildup state
Enemies become Primed for Stun at 40% buildup for Normal rarity, 50% for Magic, 60% for Rare and 70% for Unique. Crushing Blows and skills such as Boneshatter can turn that state into an immediate Heavy Stun.
Players normally need a named Heavy Stun exposure
Players and their Minions are not normally subject to Heavy Stun. A player can gain buildup when a mechanic explicitly permits it, including active Block, Parry, riding a mount or taking a Hit while sprinting.
Stun Recovery changes the disable duration
Stun Recovery makes the character recover from a Stun more quickly. It does not raise Stun Threshold, lower enemy buildup or prevent the original Hit from dealing damage.

Effect by item type

8 cases
01
Hit with 10% current Light Stun chance

Cannot Light Stun because the current chance is below the 15% minimum.

Related: Hit, Stun Threshold
02
Hit equal to the target's Stun Threshold

Has 100% base Light Stun chance before any applicable modifiers or immunity.

Related: Stun Threshold
03
Player Physical Melee Hit

Uses both 50% more multipliers, giving 125% more Light Stun chance and Heavy Stun buildup than a Hit with neither property.

Related: Physical, Melee, Hit
04
Cold Hit

Can still Light Stun, but its Cold damage does not add Heavy Stun buildup. Cold damage contributes to Chill and Freeze instead.

Related: Cold, Chill, Freeze
05
Enemy reaches its Primed threshold

Becomes eligible for Crushing Blows and skills that explicitly act on enemies Primed for Stun. The enemy is not yet Heavy Stunned.

Related: Heavy Stun, Boneshatter
06
Enemy Heavy Stun bar fills

Interrupts the enemy for multiple seconds and makes it count as Immobilised during the Heavy Stun.

Related: Heavy Stun, Immobilised
07
Player actively Blocks or Parries

Can receive Heavy Stun buildup under those skills' rules. Reaching full buildup causes a 3-second Heavy Stun.

Related: Block, Raise Shield, Parry, Heavy Stun
08
Stun Recovery modifier

Shortens the time the affected character remains unable to act after being Stunned. It does not change the incoming damage.

Limits and exceptions

7 rules
  • The 15% minimum applies to Light Stun chance, not to Heavy Stun buildup.
  • Cold damage can contribute to Light Stun but does not build Heavy Stun.
  • Players and their minions normally cannot be Heavy Stunned unless a mechanic explicitly allows buildup.
  • Stun Threshold changes susceptibility to Stun but does not reduce the Hit's damage.
  • Primed for Stun means the enemy crossed a rarity-specific buildup threshold, not that it is already Heavy Stunned.
  • Heavy Stun duration can vary by monster and should not be assumed to equal the player's 3-second duration.
  • Stun Recovery changes recovery time, not Stun Threshold or Heavy Stun buildup.
