Resistances

Resistances reduce damage of their matching type. Fire, Cold and Lightning Resistances are Elemental Resistances. Chaos Resistance is separate and does not benefit from modifiers that only say Elemental Resistances.

What Resistances does

Current rules

A character starts with 0% Resistance. The normal maximum is 75% and the hard maximum is 90%. At 75% Resistance, a matching 1,000-damage Hit becomes 250 damage before other applicable calculations. Negative Resistance increases damage, while overcapped Resistance can protect the effective value from reductions.

Apply Resistance as a percentage
Final matching damage equals incoming damage multiplied by one minus Resistance divided by 100. At 75% Resistance, 25% of the matching damage remains. At -20% Resistance, 120% remains.
The normal maximum is 75%
The default maximum for each Resistance is 75%. Effects that raise maximum Resistance can increase this limit, but no Resistance can have a maximum above the 90% hard cap.
Campaign and endgame penalties affect Elemental Resistances
The cumulative Elemental Resistance penalty progresses from -10% in Act 2 to -30% in Act 4, then reaches -40% at area level 54, -50% at area level 60 and -60% at area level 65. These progression penalties do not reduce Chaos Resistance.
Overcapped Resistance absorbs reductions
Uncapped Resistance is the total before the maximum is applied. Overcapped Resistance is the amount by which that total exceeds the current maximum and can absorb later reductions without immediately lowering effective Resistance.
Exposure and curses reduce the uncapped total
Exposure and Resistance-reducing curses change the target's uncapped Resistance. Sufficient overcap can therefore keep the effective value at its maximum after those reductions.
Penetration applies to positive effective Resistance
Penetration is applied after other Resistance changes. It affects only positive effective Resistance and has no further effect once the value used for the damage calculation reaches 0 or below.
Ignoring Resistance treats it as zero
An effect that ignores Resistance calculates the matching damage as though the target had 0% Resistance. It does not benefit from making that Resistance negative.
Maximum Resistance has increasing defensive value
Moving from 75% to 80% Resistance changes the remaining matching damage from 25% to 20%. That is 20% less matching damage taken compared with staying at 75%.

Effect by item type

8 cases
01
1,000 Fire damage at 75% Fire Resistance

250 Fire damage remains before other applicable damage-taken calculations.

Related: Fire Resistance
02
1,000 Cold damage at -20% Cold Resistance

1,200 Cold damage remains because negative Resistance increases matching damage.

Related: Cold Resistance
04
Progression penalty

Reduces all three Elemental Resistances. It does not reduce Chaos Resistance.

Related: Chaos Resistance
05
Exposure

Reduces the matching uncapped Elemental Resistance by its stated value.

Related: Exposure
06
Elemental Weakness

Reduces Elemental Resistances according to the current curse effect.

Related: Elemental Weakness, Curse
07
Penetration

Acts during the attacker's damage calculation and does not change the stored Resistance shown on the target.

Related: Hit
08
Maximum Resistance increase

Raises the effective cap but does not add uncapped Resistance by itself.

Limits and exceptions

7 rules
  • Elemental Resistance modifiers do not increase Chaos Resistance.
  • Progression penalties apply to Elemental Resistances, not Chaos Resistance.
  • Maximum Resistance and uncapped Resistance are different stats.
  • Raising maximum Resistance does not fill the new cap without enough uncapped Resistance.
  • Penetration does not change the target's stored Resistance value.
  • Penetration has no additional effect once effective Resistance is 0 or lower.
  • Resistance only affects its matching damage type.
