Curse

Curses are debuffs that weaken enemies or players. Most Curse skills affect an area after an activation delay, and a target can have one Curse by default.

What Curse does

Current rules

Choose the Curse that matches the problem you need to solve, cast it before the damage window, and wait for its activation delay. Damage builds usually lower a relevant resistance or Armour, while defensive builds use Enfeeble or Temporal Chains. Curse Magnitude scales the stated penalty, but Magic, Rare, and Unique monsters have progressively less Curse effect.

One Curse by default
A target can have one Curse on it by default. Raising your Curse limit allows another Curse to affect the same target. Whispers of Doom grants one additional Curse but doubles Curse activation delay.
Activation delay
Most directly cast Curse skills apply after a 1.5 second delay. Faster Curse Activation shortens that wait, while modifiers such as Whispers of Doom or Ritualistic Curse can make it longer.
Monster rarity penalty
Curses have 15% less effect on Magic monsters, 30% less effect on Rare monsters, and 50% less effect on Unique monsters. Plan boss damage using the reduced result, not the full tooltip value.
Skill level restriction
A low-level Curse skill cannot affect an enemy that is significantly above the skill's allowed monster level. The allowance rises with gem level and the restriction disappears at sufficiently high gem levels.
Magnitude
Increased Curse Magnitude is additive with other applicable increases to the magnitude of the debuff. Read the final debuff value together with any monster rarity penalty or less Curse effect modifier.
Duration
A Curse normally lasts for the duration stated by its skill. Curse Duration and Skill Effect Duration can change that time, while persistent delivery methods can keep applying a Curse while their condition remains true.
Curse is not Mark
Marks are a separate debuff family in Path of Exile 2. A Mark does not consume the target's Curse limit unless the specific effect says otherwise.
Hexproof
A Hexproof target is unaffected by Curses. A Curse can still be present on that target, which matters for effects that refer to a Cursed enemy, but the Curse's debuff has no effect unless another modifier allows it to affect Hexproof enemies.

Ways to use Curses

7 cases
02
Physical damage

Vulnerability reduces the target's Armour against Hits. Check the current gem page for the exact Armour reduction and monster-level limit at your gem level.

03
Defence and control

Enfeeble lowers enemy damage. Temporal Chains slows enemy actions and makes other effects on the target expire more slowly.

04
Persistent delivery

Blasphemy turns socketed Curse skills into Auras that apply their effects to nearby enemies. Each socketed Curse has its own Spirit reservation and the normal Curse limit still matters.

05
Melee delivery

Hand of Chayula dashes to an enemy, Strikes it, triggers socketed Marks, and applies socketed Curses with increased duration.

06
Support choices

Focused Curse shortens activation time, Heightened Curse increases power, Cursed Ground ties the Curse to an area, and Hex Bloom spreads the Curse when a cursed enemy dies.

Additional Curse

Whispers of Doom raises the Curse limit by one and doubles activation delay. This is a direct tradeoff for builds that need two simultaneous Curses.

Limits and exceptions

6 rules
  • Curse Magnitude shown on a gem is not the final effect against Magic, Rare, or Unique monsters.
  • Casting a Curse does not mean it is active immediately. Direct Curse skills normally wait for their activation delay.
  • A low-level Curse can fail against enemies above its allowed monster level even when the cast animation succeeds.
  • Two copies of the same debuff type do not add together. Only the strongest applicable copy affects the target unless a specific effect states another rule.
  • Marks do not use the Curse limit and should not be counted as a second Curse.
  • Reducing Curse duration and reducing Curse effect are different defences. Removing a Curse or gaining Curse immunity is different again.
