Payoff

A Payoff skill gains a powerful extra effect when it Hits an enemy affected by a specified Debuff. It often Consumes that Debuff, and it cannot inflict the same Debuff that enables its Payoff effect.

What Payoff does

Current rules

Identify the exact required Debuff, whether the skill merely checks it or Consumes it, and which Hit or component receives the benefit. Plan a separate setup source because the Payoff skill cannot inflict its own required Debuff.

Required Debuff
A Payoff effect is conditional on the exact Debuff named by the skill. A related Ailment or another debuff does not substitute unless the skill says it can.
Cannot self-enable
Payoff skills cannot inflict the Debuff they interact with, so another skill, party member, minion, or effect must establish it.
Consumption is explicit
Many Payoff skills Consume the enabling Debuff, but Payoff does not mean every matching skill always Consumes. Use the individual skill wording.
One Consumption benefit
Only one Consumption benefit can occur at once, and Consumption effects from Skills take priority over Consumption benefits from other sources.
Temporary immunity
Consuming a Debuff makes the enemy immune to that Debuff for 1 second, which can delay the next setup and Payoff cycle.
Benefit is component-specific
The extra explosion, projectile, improved bolt, or other reward belongs to the component stated by the skill and does not automatically enhance every part of the use.

Related: Hit
03
Payoff effect

The skill grants its stated extra damage, explosion, projectile, improved component, or other reward.

Related: Damage
04
Consumption

If the skill says it Consumes the Debuff, that Debuff is removed and only one Consumption benefit occurs at once.

05
Reset window

A consumed Debuff cannot be reapplied for 1 second, so the setup source and attack speed must be planned around that immunity.

Limits and exceptions

4 rules
  • Payoff does not mean the skill always Consumes its enabling Debuff. The skill text must say so.
  • The Payoff skill cannot inflict the same Debuff it checks, even if its damage type would normally be able to inflict it.
  • A Consumption benefit from another source can lose priority to a Consumption effect built into the skill.
  • The one-second immunity after Consumption can prevent immediate reapplication of the consumed Debuff.
