What Command does

Current rules

The player issues a Command from the skill bar, then the corresponding Minion performs the commanded action. Place the permanent Minion's Command Skill on the skill bar and use it when the Minion and its Command are available. Supports socketed into the Minion also affect its Command Skill when applicable, Cast Speed changes the command-issuing animation, and Command Skill cooldown modifiers change how often the Minion can perform the action.

The player issues the Command
A Command is not ordinary autonomous Minion behaviour. The player uses the corresponding Command Skill, then an eligible Minion performs the commanded action.
The Command can replace the Minion on the skill bar
A permanent Minion is selected and reserved through the Skills panel rather than summoned with a normal button press. When it has a Command Skill, that Command can occupy the skill-bar slot in place of the Minion itself.
Minion Supports also affect the Command
Support Gems applied to the Minion affect both the Minion and its Command Skill when the support is applicable. Bidding improves Command damage and cooldown recovery, while Commandment greatly improves Command cooldown recovery but removes non-Command damage.
Cast Speed changes the issuing animation
Cast Speed modifiers apply to the player's animation for issuing the Command. This is distinct from modifiers to the Minion's attack or cast speed when it performs the commanded action.
Command cooldown belongs to the commanded action
Command Skills can have their own cooldown. Bidding and Commandment explicitly modify the supported Minion's Cooldown Recovery Rate for Command Skills.
Movement is slowed while issuing a Command
All Command Skills apply a 50% movement speed penalty during skill use. This changed from 70% in Content Update 0.5.0.
Most Commands preserve Shapeshift form
Issuing a non-channelled Minion Command while Shapeshifted does not return the character to human form. Channelled Command Skills are the stated exception.
Manual direction is not always a Command Skill
Minions can be directed to move, target an enemy, or open a chest. That general control is separate from a named Skill with the Command tag.

Build around Commands

Lineage Supports can reward repeated or varied Command use. Varashta's Blessing scales the supported non-Minion Skill for each different Command Skill used recently.

Limits and exceptions

5 rules
  • Not every Minion has a named Command Skill.
  • Manual movement or target direction does not by itself mean the Minion has the Command tag.
  • The player issues the Command, but the Minion performs the commanded action.
  • Support compatibility still applies before a Support can modify the Minion and its Command.
  • Channelled Commands can end Shapeshift form even though non-channelled Commands do not.
