What Meta does

Current rules

Read the Meta Gem as a container with an exact compatibility rule. Check which Skill Gems it accepts, what condition or Energy threshold activates them, which Supports apply, and whether the socketed skill is used, Triggered, or performed by another entity.

Gem container
Meta Gems accept compatible Skill Gems and Support Gems in their own sockets. Most require at least one Skill Gem to function.
No nested Meta Gems
A Meta Gem can never be socketed into another Meta Gem.
Supports propagate by compatibility
A Support Gem socketed in a Meta Gem supports the Meta Gem and each compatible socketed Skill Gem. Incompatible Supports do not apply merely because they share the container.
Behavior comes from the Meta Gem
The container can Trigger a socketed skill, apply a Mark, create an entity that uses a skill, or grant another behavior. Socketing does not make every Meta Gem a Trigger Gem.
Energy is common, not universal
Many Trigger Meta Gems gain Energy from a named event and spend it at a threshold. Other Meta Gems use cooldowns, intervals, charges, or direct conditions instead.
Socket restrictions are exact
A Meta Gem can restrict socketed skills by Spell, Attack, element, Mark, weapon, cooldown, or another predicate. A gem that fails that wording cannot be used in that Meta Gem.

What to verify in a Meta Gem setup

5 cases
01
Socket compatibility

The socketed Skill Gem must satisfy every restriction printed by the Meta Gem.

02
Activation event

Defines what gains Energy, applies a skill, creates an entity, or starts the Meta Gem's behavior.

Related: Trigger
03
Energy threshold

For Energy-based Meta Gems, compares gained Energy with the threshold or maximum required to Trigger socketed skills.

Related: Energy, Power
04
Socketed Supports

Support the Meta Gem and compatible socketed skills, subject to Support Category and compatibility restrictions.

05
Resulting action

Can be a Trigger, automatic application, Mirage or Totem use, or another explicitly described action. Each has different ownership and use rules.

Limits and exceptions

4 rules
  • Meta Gems cannot be socketed into other Meta Gems.
  • A Skill Gem being socketable does not mean every Support in the container is compatible with it.
  • Not every Meta Gem uses Energy or Triggers skills. The Meta Gem's own description controls the behavior.
  • Triggered socketed skills follow Trigger restrictions, including the inability to Trigger Channelled skills.
