What Rarity does

Current rules

Read the subject attached to Rarity. Item rarity means Normal, Magic, Rare, or Unique and controls an item's modifier structure. Monster Rarity makes Magic and Rare monsters more likely and can give Rare monsters more modifiers. Increased Rarity of Items Found improves the kinds of loot selected when items drop.

Item rarity
Normal, Magic, Rare, and Unique are structural item states. For modifiable non-unique items, the state controls how many affixes the item can have and which crafting actions can be used on it.
Normal items
Normal items have no explicit affixes, although a base type can still have an implicit modifier. They can be upgraded with currency such as an Orb of Transmutation, Orb of Alchemy, or Orb of Chance.
Magic items
Magic items naturally have one or two affixes. Ordinary equipment is normally limited to one prefix and one suffix, while item classes capped at two modifiers cannot be upgraded to Rare.
Rare items
Rare items naturally have at least three affixes. The maximum is four or six depending on item type, with ordinary equipment usually allowing up to three prefixes and three suffixes.
Unique items
Unique items have a specific name and a defined set of possible modifiers, often including effects unavailable in the ordinary affix pool. Unique does not mean that every numeric value is better than a Rare item.
Monster Rarity
Since version 0.5.0, Monster Rarity is a separate map stat. It raises the chances of Magic and Rare monsters and the chance for Rare monsters to gain additional modifiers.
Rarity of Items Found
Item Rarity affects how good selected drops are. It can shift equipment toward higher rarity or better unidentified tiers and can upgrade currency outcomes, but it does not guarantee a specific item or currency.
Waystone bonuses
Item Rarity and Monster Rarity are separate Waystone bonus categories in version 0.5.0. Waystone bonuses multiply with other sources such as Atlas Passive Tree bonuses.

A named item with a defined modifier set and often an exclusive mechanical effect.

Limits and exceptions

5 rules
  • Currency and quest items do not use the Normal, Magic, Rare, and Unique equipment structure. Currency items instead have individual drop rarity and weights.
  • Item level controls which affixes and tiers are eligible. Changing an item's rarity does not by itself raise its item level or remove low eligible affix tiers.
  • An unidentified Tier 2 to Tier 5 label improves the modifiers generated on identification. It does not improve modifiers added by later crafting.
  • Monster Rarity, Item Rarity, Monster Effectiveness, Pack Size, and additional Rare Monsters are different map bonuses. Do not treat one number as a substitute for all the others.
  • Exact drop probabilities and the complete rarity conversion formula are not published. Item Rarity changes odds, not guaranteed outcomes.
