Attack

An Attack is a skill with the Attack tag. It normally takes its base damage, attack speed, and base Critical Hit Chance from an equipped Martial Weapon, unless the skill states a different rule.

What Attack does

Current rules

Check the Attack tag, the Requires line, Attack Damage, Attack Speed, and the skill's other tags. Those fields tell you whether the skill uses your weapon, which weapon it accepts, how much of the base damage it uses, how quickly it attacks, and which narrower modifiers can apply.

Attack tag
The Attack tag is the reliable classification. A skill granted by a wand, staff, item, or ascendancy is not an Attack unless the skill itself has the Attack tag.
Weapon-derived base
Most Attacks use the equipped Martial Weapon's damage, attacks per second, and base Critical Hit Chance. Local weapon modifiers change those displayed weapon values before the skill uses them.
Attack Damage
A skill line such as Attack Damage: 200% of base means the skill uses twice its relevant base attack damage. The percentage can change with skill level and is not the same as a global increased Attack Damage modifier.
Attack Speed
A skill's Attack Speed percentage modifies the rate inherited from its base attack. Applicable Attack Speed and Skill Speed modifiers then affect use speed, unless the skill gives an unmodifiable or total attack time.
Accuracy
Player Attacks normally check Accuracy against the target's Evasion and Deflection. There is no distance penalty within 2 metres, scaling to as much as 90% less Accuracy beyond 9 metres.
Damage type
Attack is a damage source classification, not a damage type. An Attack can deal Physical, Fire, Cold, Lightning, or Chaos damage, and conversion does not turn the skill into a Spell.
Modifier matching
Every restriction in a modifier must match. Attack Damage applies to Attack damage, Elemental Damage with Attacks applies only to an Attack's elemental damage, and Melee or Projectile modifiers need those additional properties.
Hits
Instant damage from an Attack is Hit damage. Effects that require a Hit apply only when that component hits, while damage over time and other non-hit components follow their own wording.

How to read an Attack skill

5 cases
01
Tags

Attack confirms the source type. Melee, Projectile, AoE, Strike, Slam, and damage-type tags narrow support and modifier compatibility.

02
Requires

Names the weapon class or equipment the skill can use. Meeting the Attack tag alone does not satisfy a weapon restriction.

03
Attack Damage

Shows the percentage of base attack damage used by the skill at the selected gem level.

04
Attack Speed

Shows how quickly this skill attacks relative to its base. A listed total attack time or explicit override takes priority.

05
Can't be Evaded

The Attack bypasses the normal Accuracy and Evasion check and has 100% chance to hit from that check.

Limits and exceptions

5 rules
  • Spells granted by wands, staves, or other items remain Spells. They do not use a weapon's inherent damage, Attack Speed, or base Critical Hit Chance unless the skill explicitly says otherwise.
  • Attack does not automatically mean Physical, Melee, Projectile, Strike, or Slam. Read every tag and the skill text before choosing supports or modifiers.
  • Some Attacks set their own attack time, use a shield or another nonstandard base, or state that a weapon stat does not affect them. Explicit skill text overrides the usual weapon-derived rule.
  • Melee and area Attacks are still subject to the normal Accuracy check unless they say they Can't be Evaded or Always Hit.
  • An Attack skill can contain secondary or damage-over-time components. Attack and Hit wording applies only to the components that match it.
